Who This Is For
IOU Finance LLC ("IOU," "we," "us") operates the IOU mobile app and the website at legal.iou.llc. This page explains how to request deletion of your IOU account and data — including if you no longer have the app installed.
How to Request Deletion
Option A — In the app
Open IOU, go to Settings → Account → Delete Account, type DELETE to confirm, and re-enter your password when prompted. This revokes your login immediately.
Option B — Without the app
Email legal@iou.llc with the subject line "Account Deletion Request" from the email address on your account, and include the full name and phone number associated with your account so we can locate and verify it. You do not need to reinstall the app to make this request.
IOU will never ask you to include your password, Social Security Number, bank account or routing number, or a one-time verification code in a deletion request. Do not send these to us by email.
What Happens When You Delete Your Account
Once your deletion request is confirmed, your ability to sign in to IOU is revoked, and the following account-level data is deleted:
- Login access and active sessions
- Phone verification codes on file
- In-app notifications addressed to you
- Profile visibility settings
- Relationship labels you've set for other users
DELETION IS NOT INSTANTANEOUS FOR ALL DATA. Requests submitted by email are processed within ten (10) business days, and some records are retained for longer as described below and in our published Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
What Is Retained, and Why
IOU is a platform for documenting financial agreements and payment records between users. Because of this, deleting your account does not delete:
- Payment agreement terms, transaction history, and payment records
- Signatures and legal acceptances tied to an agreement
- Identity verification information collected when you registered
- Trust/reliability history associated with your agreements
These records are retained for a minimum of five (5) years after account closure, as required by applicable financial recordkeeping law and as disclosed in our Terms of Service (Account Closure) and Privacy Policy (Data Retention and Deletion).
Shared records: If you entered into a payment agreement with another user, that agreement and the record of your acceptance remain visible to the other party and retained as part of their own transaction history. Deleting your account does not remove the other party's copy of a shared agreement.
Bank Connections (Plaid and Dwolla)
Deleting your IOU account does NOT automatically disconnect your linked bank account or revoke IOU's access through Plaid, and does not automatically close your Dwolla payment profile. These are managed through separate third-party systems.
If you'd like your Plaid bank connection or Dwolla customer record disconnected as part of your deletion request, say so in your email to legal@iou.llc and we will process it manually. You can also manage your Plaid connection directly through your bank or through Plaid's own tools; see Plaid's Privacy Policy and Dwolla's Privacy Policy.
Timing
- Account closure requests are processed within ten (10) business days, provided you have no active payment agreements pending final resolution. If you have active agreements, let us know and we'll advise on next steps before closing the account.
- Personal information tied to your account is deactivated within five (5) business days and permanently deleted within thirty (30) days, except for the retained records described above.
